San Diego, California, United States, 4th May 2024 — St. Paul’s Senior Services hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for The Manor on Bankers Hill, a revitalized active retirement community designed to address the pressing needs of seniors with modest incomes in San Diego. The building underwent a 20-million-dollar renovation to enhance its amenities and services with state-of-the-art upgrades. Mayor Todd Gloria cut the ceremonial ribbon to mark the community’s official opening.
Attendees heard speeches from St. Paul’s Senior Services President & CEO Michael McHale, Foundation CEO Todd Kaprielian, and Mayor Todd Gloria. The event signified a proactive step in tackling the challenges posed by the growing financial crisis faced by seniors across America.
According to recent studies, the number of seniors over 75 who struggle to pay for housing and healthcare will increase by 90% over the next decade. The Manor on Bankers Hill aims to offer an affordable solution for this segment of seniors, also known as the “Forgotten Middle,” who don’t qualify for government subsidies yet face financial barriers to accessing quality housing and services.
The building’s extensive remodel features new furnishings, advanced safety features, an updated library, a modern bistro, and fully-equipped kitchens and bathrooms in every apartment. Residents will have access to a comprehensive suite of services, including transportation, prepared meals, housekeeping, and social programs necessary for fostering a supportive senior community.
The renovation of The Manor on Bankers Hill was made possible by generous gifts from several donors and esteemed San Diego organizations, such as the Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies, Community Congregational Development Corporation, David C. Copley Foundation, Well-Grow Foundation, Akaloa Resource Foundation, and the Herbert and Judy Paige Family Foundation.
